Chair Designer Dr. Jerome Congleton, inventor of the Neutral Posture® Chair, is a professor in the Safety Engineering Program at Texas A&M University and Co-Director of the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center in Ergonomics. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Evansville in Indiana, a Master of Science in Management from the University of Arkansas, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University with research emphasis in ergonomics/human factors (The Design of the Workplace to Fit the Worker). Previously, Dr. Congleton worked at Alcoa for eight years as an industrial engineer and safety manager solving work posture and material handling problems. Prior to that, he served seven years as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. He is a Vietnam Veteran with 213 combat missions for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and 16 Oak Leaf Clusters to the Air Medal. Dr. Congleton serves as a consultant for Research and Development at Neutral Posture Inc. in Bryan, Texas. In addition to his teaching duties, he works with industry in professional and ergonomic evaluation research (over 4 million dollars support). He is an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Texas A&M Athletic Department providing assistance in improving performance of athletes through biomechanic and physiology measurement. He has graduated 18 PhD's and 42 Masters Students in Ergonomics. Dr. Congleton has three patents, and twenty-seven refereed journal publications. He is past Co-Director of the Ergonomics and Work Measurement Division of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the International Industrial Ergonomics and Safety Foundation. His main goal is the prevention and control of injuries/illness. His primary research interests are seated research, workplace design, prevention and control of back and carpal tunnel syndrome injuries, worker physiology and ergonomics.
