Jasper Community Boston Specifications:
Wood Species: All parts are constructed from select northern grown hardwood, the bench model #991 & #993 from oak and maple
the additional models from either oak and maple. All lumber is thoroughly air seasoned before kiln drying to a
moisture content of 6%. The lumber is then allowed to temper before milling. All parts selected for steam bending are
partially air seasoned before bending, then kiln dried to a moisture content of less than 6% after bending.
Details of Construction: The seat is made from 1 Ѕ” lumber. Seat joints are held together with a high grade of glue and the seat is
double saddled and rounded in front for maximum comfort and style. The top back is constructed from 1
ј” lumber. It is steam bent for strength, comfort and style. The top back, on models without arms, is
attached to the back uprights with three compressed spiral-grooved hardware dowels and glue and a #12 x
3” steel screw at each joint. All screw heads are countersunk and covered with wood flush plugs for
complete concealment. The arms are attached to the arm posts with two compressed, spiral-grooved
hardware dowels and glue at each joint. The joints are rounded and flush to give the appearance of a
continuous curvature of wood. The vertical posts are notched to fit over the outside edge of the seat and are
glued and screwed securely to the edge of the seat with two #12 steel screws at each joint with the screw
heads covered with wood buttons. The vertical back slats are band sawed to special design and are
precisely fitted into the top and seat; both the bottom chucked ends and the top tapered ends are glued to
adjoining parts to assure permanent binding and prevent turning. The front legs are made from 2” square
lumber and are tapered to 1 ј” at the bottom. Back legs are made from 1 Ѕ” lumber and are band sawed to
shape. Seat rails are made from 1Ѕ” lumber and all stretchers are made from 1” solid wood. Stretchers are
attached to adjoining parts with 9/16” chucks and glue. The steam bent side stretchers are also screwed to
the front and back legs from the under side and the cross stretchers are pinned. The seat rails are doweled
and glued to the legs. The chair top section is securely attached to the bottom leg portion with eight #12
steel screws. The frame is further reinforced with corner blocks which are glued and screwed to the seat
rails. For extra stability and strength, a 3” screw is placed through the center of each corner block and into
each adjoining leg. All chair parts are properly sanded and edges well rounded.
Hardware: The swivel iron mechanisms are heavy duty irons that revolve and tilt and have height adjustments. All
swivel chairs are equipped with solid wood 4-leg bases. The spider portion attaches to the underside of the seat with
four screws. The swivel mechanism has tension adjustment for tilt and height adjustment of approximately 4 inches
for the seat. The casters are 2 inch ball bearing rubber wheel. The metal base hub has a nylon liner to prevent wear
and provide silent maneuverability. All leg chairs are equipped with rubber cushion metal glides.
Finish: Each chair has an even coat of a no-wipe stain, followed by a coat of sealer. A light sanding is given and
then oven dried for 30 minutes. Another coat of catalyzed sealer is applied and oven dried for another 30
minutes. Another light sanding process is performed to assure a smooth finish. Then the product is
sprayed with a 45 sheen catalyzed lacquer and oven dried for an additional 30 minutes. Then there is a 30
minute cool down period before final inspection.
Upholstery: Each seat consists of a 1 Ѕ” thick high density polyurethane padding. All upholstery materials pass the
California Fire Retardant Code, Class 1, Commercial Standard 191-53, and Technical Bulletin #117.
